A PROPOSAL FOR CCA Student and Media Center
San Francisco’s design district is anchored by California College of the Arts’ campus, which is home to the college’s graduate programs and undergraduate programs in architecture and design as well as to the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Art. The CCA Commons houses the student and media center, extending the campus to the periphery of Interstate 280 immediately west of the Mission Bay district. The private institutional building expands its programming to serve the greater design community with a gallery, a café, a black-box theater, and an outdoor amphitheater. The CCA Commons is a didactic project, designed as a zero-carbon, high-performance building that integrates onsite renewable energy systems, uses responsible waste-management and water-conservation practices, and encourages clean-air transit.
